Heterosis Series
Artist Statement
Heterosis Series represents a transition in my wall sculptures, in which I am expanding my visual language beyond that of the Rust Stain Series. By incorporating more variety of fabric and exposing more of their skeletal structure -- as well as using more "twisting" elements, I am adopting a hybrid approach in creating new forms. Hence, these transitional pieces appeal to me as sculptural metaphors of the genetic concept of heterosis, as defined in the American Heritage Dictionary:
“Increased vigor or other superior qualities arising from the crossbreeding of genetically different plants or animals. Also called "hybrid vigor".
Ultimately, I am inspired by the notion of how "cross-breeding" different textiles and shapes into my work can invigorate them with an energy that is both quirky and joyful, yet, at the same time, evocative of various biological, mechanical, and contemplative notions.
